Bank On Initiatives
“Unbanked” is a term for individuals who conduct their financial transactions outside of the financial mainstream. This means they do not have/use products such as checking accounts, credit cards, savings accounts and mortgages. The Bank On program started in San Francisco in 2006 as an initiative to help the unbanked enter the financial mainstream. It began as a two-year public-private partnership with the city, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the National League of Cities, the Federal Reserve Bank, plus a number of participating financial institutions and nonprofit organizations. In Texas, the initiative has taken root in Houston, Central Texas, Dallas and San Antonio. For more information click here.
